The course has been written by trauma healthcare specialists based on their hands on experiences of farming and forestry accidents.
It has been endorsed by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The Course complies with the teaching and educational standards of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care.
The 3.5 hour course covers the following areas:
The aims of first aid, scene safety and the role of the First Aider
Assessing a casualty using the Primary Survey
Unresponsive and breathing casualty - recovery position
Unresponsive and not breathing casualty CPR using current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines
AED (Automated External Defibrillator) - rationale for using the AED, safe use, reporting/recording, handover to the emergency services
Treatment of crush injury, amputation, impalement, and severe bleeding
It is divided into two sections:
Basic Life Saving Skills: Patient Assessment and CPR.
Scenario Training: Role play common farm accidents with the delegates to get hands on experience of the types of scenarios they can find themselves in.
The training is delivered by qualified health care professionals registered with the HCPC and experienced instructors and casualty actors.
Each attendee has the opportunity to act both as the lead first aider and as a helper/bystander.
This short course has been developed for the types of life changing trauma which occurs in farming and forestry. Giving specific training to meet farmer and forester needs, and more importantly, to equip a student to save a life until professional help arrives.
It is a fully practical course with no written assessment, and valid for 3 years.
Awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
The course is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).
It is not an HSE First Aid at Work course.
The course is for adults aged 18 and over.
